The grants were presented to all four Fairfield campuses in dramatic fashion as the band marched through the halls while the Education Foundation Board of Directors handed out checks to the recipients. “It is the absolute best day for the board. We are always excited to see the faces on the faculty and students when they receive the grants,” said FISD Education Foundation President Brian Evans. Jennifer Chavers’ junior high students will receive funds for digital discovery programs to connect students with the outside world and learn to problem solve through teamwork.  Fairfield Junior High School was also awarded orb robots that target problem solving and creative thinking through a coding application. School board trustees unanimously voted to accept bids from Supreme Fixture Company for a junior high freezer at $40,689 and a high school freezer for $44,140 with a 30 percent down payment.

Superintendent Tony Price said he will ask the company to begin June 1.

Fairfield heads to the playoffs in Palestine Thursday night where they will compete against Wills Point High School after winning the battle of the Eagles in Salado last week. The final score of last week’s game was a rather close 28-15, bringing their final win-loss in district to 8-2.

Because of stadiums either closing or already having games scheduled on Friday night, the teams will face each other a day earlier at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15.

Coached by Greg Cranfill, the Wills Point Tigers’ win-loss record is at 5-4.

Following in her older sister's footsteps, Brittani Oglesbee has worked her way to the top of her graduating class, finishing as valedictorian with a 5.43 GPA. Oglesbee worked hard to keep her grades up, but never really knew that she would graduate valedictorian.

“There is a lot of competition in my grade, so I feel honored to be valedictorian,” she said.

Oglesbee said her favorite classes throughout high school were Journalism and English.

“I had Mrs. [Kathie] Maciel all four years, first for Pre-AP English I and then Journalism,” she said. “She was a great teacher and I loved her class.”

The top student also loved having Theresa Matthews as her Pre-AP English II teacher, saying she was “one of the best teachers I have every had throughout my time in Fairfield schools.”

Authors welcomed at Fairfield Library

Fairfield students recently penned books as a special project, which are now displayed at the Fairfield Library. Library patrons can scan the QR code on any book to hear the story read in the author's voice or watch a movie based on the book and created by the author. Last week, students brought their parents to the library on a special Book Mobile bus, which shuttled 1st through 5th grades over from their campuses. Pictured is Library Director Gary Wiggins enjoying a book with author Anna Allen.
