Saturday proved to be a successful day for four members of the Wortham High School Choir Program. Since July, students of the state of Texas in high school programs have been working on selections chosen by the Texas Music Educators Association for advancing students to the state level choirs. Though Wortham ISD is a 2A classification, it is proud to have both a junior high and high school choir program. There are currently 35 students studying to benefit from the classes and maintain a busy calendar schedule for performance.

County welcomes 2 exchange students

Two Freestone County families have welcomed a new culture into their home by participating in the foreign exchange program through Youth For Understanding (YFU). Chad and Stephanie Wood, of Wortham, are hosting Germany native Freyja for the 2018-19 school year. Freyja will attend Teague High School. Charles and Kylie Neidich, of Fairfield, are hosting Hana from Japan and she will attend Fairfield High School. Exchange students experience tremendous personal growth during their program year. At the same time, the impressions made by the students themselves will broaden perspectives of host families and ultimately ripple through schools and across entire communities. YFU, one of the world’s oldest, largest, and most respected intercultural exchange programs, has been changing the way we see

With just two practices under its belt, the Wortham volleyball team was out of sync in its season-opener, losing to Mexia in three sets at Wortham Tuesday. Game scores were

25-16, 25-23, 25-18.

Wortham coach DeAnna Whaley said her team was not sharp in their season opener. But in addition to having just two practices, they also played without setter and team captain Jayde Hamilton, who sat out due to an injury.

Local boy gets big movie role

When Wortham’s Luke Winters, then 10, and his father, Shane, heard last summer about an open-casting call in Waco for boys to be in a movie they were intrigued enough to go, but did not have much hope that Luke would actually get a part.

That was in late August 2017, during the time Hurricane Harvey struck Texas, and they were already planning to go to Waco the day of the audition.

“We got up early that morning, and it was raining out,” Shane said, “and I told the kids, ‘Hey, do you want to have some fun?’ So we ran to Waco, went to the hotel and we were one of the first ones there.”
