County talks closure of Pct. 1 voting box

Like a scene out of the 1972 film Deliverance, the Liberty voting box stands at the intersection of County Roads 300 and 302 in the Butler area. Because the building is so neglected, commissioners are discussing the possibility of closing it down. Voters will not cast their votes at this box again until the March primaries in 2018.

County commissioners are discussing the permanent closure of the Liberty voting box which stands at the intersection of County Roads 300 and 302 in the Butler area of precinct 1. The one-room building could use some renovation work, but Pct. 1 Commissioner Andy Bonner thinks it should be closed.
“There's no electricity, no restroom or air conditioning, the floor is rotting, it's not handicap accessible,” explained Precinct 1 Commissioner Andy Bonner at last week's county meeting. “It needs to be closed.”
Election judge Opal Oliver, however, disagrees.
“They're [the voters] wanting at least their voices heard,” said Opal. “They want to keep that box open. It would cost them to drive the 18 miles to Fairfield and the 18 miles back just to vote. That's an inconvenience.”
The Liberty voting box only saw 10 voters during the May run-off elections last year.
