The Fairfield Eagles (4-2) face the Mexia Blackcats (2-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at the Mexia High School Stadium in an attempt to recoup some of their losses after their 20-17 loss to the Madisonville Mustangs last week.

The Blackcats – ranked 425 in the state – are coached by Frank Sandoval and Eagles Head Coach John Bachtel says his team will have to contain their speed in order to beat them.

As the only undefeated team in 18-4A through the first half of the district race, the Eagles literally flew circles around the Madisonville Mustangs last Tuesday, Jan. 24, almost doubling them, 75-38! Then, on Friday, they fell behind early in the game to Athens, 10-2, then came back to take a 21-20 lead just before the first quarter ended.

They eventually won a fiercely fought battle on the very last possessions of the game by two points! Fairfield goes into their Tuesday night, Jan. 31 rematch with second place Mexia, ranked No. 27 in the state in Class 4-A (188 schools) by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and 11th by the computer formulas of Max Preps. They currently stand (22-5) for the season!
