Roads closed, people rescued Monday

A section of County Road 1051 is missing after flash floods washed through the Kirvin area Monday. The road has been closed by Pct. 4 Commissioner Clyde Ridge.

Several county roads are closed and high-water rescues were performed in the early morning hours of Monday, Nov. 12, by area firemen after a line of heavy thunderstorms swept through the area. According to local “weatherman” Barney Leach, approximately 3.52 inches of rain was received at his home west of Fairfield. Teague VFD reported

2 arrested in pot operation

Two individuals were arrested in Kirvin after officers discovered a marijuana growth operation while following up on an alleged threat report.

Freestone County Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Willis arrested 68-year-old Richard Burton Reichert and his wife, Terri Lynn Reichert, 57, at their home in Kirvin on FM 80 North Saturday, Aug. 25.

Deputies allegedly found an active marijuana

New book mentions 2 historic churches

Of the 186 churches in a new book written by William and Mary Pamela Schaefer, Harmony Church in Steward's Mill (pictured) and Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church of Kirvin were both mentioned.

Two local historic churches were mentioned in a newly published book by Houston residents William and Mary Pamela Schaefer. Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church of Kirvin and Harmony Church of Stewards Mill each got their own page in the book featuring 186 historic churches throughout Texas.

According to the synopsis, the Schaefer’s have visited and photographed approximately 1,000 historic churches in Texas over the past 10 years.

Mannfried O. Bertrand, 92, of Kirvin, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, in Fairfield. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, at Capps Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dale Hergett, of Kirvin Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed at Woodland Cemetery. Mr. Bertrand was born July 25, 1925 in Orange, Texas to parents Olede and Marie Denise Veillon Bertrand.

Cotton Gin members honored

Eleven members of the Cotton Gin Masonic Lodge No. 154 in Krivin were recently honored for their years of service. These members earned 25- and 40-year service awards on Monday, Sept. 18. Standing (from left) are Mark Taylor, Ralph Billings, Wade Bottoms, Jr., Joe Barrow, Carl Alexander, Fred Carter, Roger McCrary, Larry Davis, and Willie Williams; seated is Ed Prasil and Ray Forrester is kneeling. The charter for the Lodge was granted Jan. 18, 1855, and members meet on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

Gary Mennerick

Gary Wayne Mennerick, 57, of Fairfield, passed away Saturday, May 28, at his residence. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Lake Chapel Cemetery. Gary was born August 22, 1958, in Dallas, to parents John Wayne and Ethel Carra Hancock Mennerick. He had been a resident of Fairfield over 15 years having moved from LaRue, Texas. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Zoch Construction. He and his wife, Sharon had been married since December 3, 2001.
