Little Dribblers qualify for Nationals

The girls and boys Little Dribblers All-Star teams competed last weekend in the 2016 Little Dribblers, Inc. Regional Tournament with great results. For the Fairfield girl’s teams, the Junior, Major, and Senior Division all received the Championship title. For the Fairfield boy’s teams, the Major and Senior Division received the Runner-Up title. Our winners have qualified to compete in the Little Dribblers, Inc. National Tournament in April, which will be hosted in Mexia.

County readies for Aggie Muster

The Freestone County A&M Club is hosting the annual Aggie Muster at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21. Muster includes dinner, speaker Karen McNeely '74 (first female campus muster chair while attending A&M) and a Muster program honoring Aggies past and present. The cost of the evening is $15, which includes dinner and a beverage. Kids are $6; age 5 and under are free. Aggie Muster is celebrated in more than 300 locations worldwide and is a wonderful event to connect with fellow Aggies and those that enjoy the spirit of A&M.

Gather your teammates for the 2016 Big T's Bash

Big T Bash is just around the Corner. In past years, this event was held in the month of August; however, this year the cook-off will be April 8-9, 2016 at the W.L. Moody Reunion Fairgrounds in Fairfield.

The cook-off is brisket only and price for entry is $300 per 3-man team. Cook teams will begin cooking Friday evening and judging will be held Saturday around noon.

Free entertainment will be offered Friday night and consists of an acoustic set comprised of three country musicians, Matt Caldwell, TJ Broscoff, and Kylie Rae Harris.

Golden Circle Special Needs Association, the group organizing the event, is also looking for sponsors. Sponsorships available are Platinum - $2,500; Gold $1,000; and Silver - $500.

No injuries in structure fire

Local fire departments battled a structure fire earlier today on Hwy 75 north. The building was uninhabited so no injuries were reported. A neighbor, Mr. Dogan, said there is no electric or butane hooked up to the house. Fire investigators are looking into the cause. See the full story in the April 7 edition of the Recorder.

Estate auction slated for April 9

An estate auction is slated for 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, April 10, in Teague. There are multiple items for sale in the estate of Douglas C. Hurst, who was murdered in his Teague home last year. The auction is being hosted by O'Neals Auctioneering, of Waco. Auctioneer Bobby O'Neal will be onsite.

Local girl recognized for Texas essay

Fourth grader Emery Black, of Dew, was awarded by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) Sterling C. Robertson Chapter for her first place essay about James Butler Bonham, The Messenger of the Alamo. Black entered the contest in February and won a desk set of the six flags that have flown over Texas as well as $100.

The fourth grader read her essay, complete in a pioneer dress, at the DRT's celebration honoring Texas' 180th anniversary of the Texas Declaration of Independence being signed. The event was held at Knox Hall at the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco.

Lt. Col. Joseph H. Bennett, family cemetery

A few miles east of Streetman and north of FM 3059 lay the remains of a hero of the Texas Revolution Battle of San Jacinto, Colonel of a regiment defending its frontier, a Representative in the Congress of the Republic of Texas, who was involved in the Somervell Expedition and other early events. Colonel Bennett's head rights were located in Freestone and Navarro counties. More than 25 years ago I became interested in Col. Bennett and the small cemetery he and family members were buried in.

At that time Miss Sally Epps and Mrs. Stella Jo McCowan, two lovely elderly ladies living in Streetman who were granddaughters, became concerned the little cemetery had been destroyed.
