Eagles fall to Waco Connally 40-23

Fairfield’s 2016 gridiron fortunes continued its’ slide into unaccustomed waters last Friday night, as an ineffective passing game & repeated center snap problems in the 1st quarter alone, hobbled the offense, while the Eagle defense didn’t get its’ claws unfurled until they had yielded their 27th point early in the 2nd period! Two plays into the game, after Fairfield had received the opening kickoff, a rolling snap & a launch over the QB’s head set the offense back 19 yards & wrecked their effectiveness. After another great Rodriguez-Reyes punt of 45 yards, Connally set up shop at their own 42 yard line, taking only five plays & 1:54 on the scoreboard clock to get their 1st of four first half TD’s! Over the next four offensive series, the Eagles earned one 1st down on a bruising Akeem Jackson 15 yard jaunt, but had three incomplete pass attempts & another snap that sailed far over its’ intended target’s head! Meanwhile, Connally took only 11 plays & less than four minutes of playing time to add two more touchdowns to their side of the scoreboard and extend the lead to 21-0 in the 1st quarter! Even the much more talented offenses of LaVega & China Spring hadn’t been able to do that on the Eagle defense! Finally, on Connally’s 4th possession early in the 2nd quarter, the defense, buoyed by Jackson’s 2nd of his six tackles for losses in the game, rose up & stopped the Cadets, forcing their 1st punt. With Fairfield starting at their own 18, it only took Connally three play to score their 4th TD…! Another bad snap & a fumble turned the ball over at the nine yard line, and the Cadets scored on the next play. After a missed PAT, the score stood 27-0 with only 3:25 gone in the 2nd period!
