Lady Eagles lose to Madisonville, JV wins

Article Image Alt Text

Lady Eagle Claire Partain zeroes in on a high-fly ball in last week's game with Madisonville. Fairfield's lanky centerfielder made the catch for the final out of the inning.

Despite Banner Monico's two-hit night and Kaci Bachtel's strong first five innings on the mound, Fairfield's varsity softball team fell 9-0 to Madisonville last Tuesday, March 15, in Fairfield. Bachtel shut out the hot Lady Mustang bats through five innings, striking out batters in each inning, after giving up four unearned runs in the first. The Lady Eagles could muster only three hits off the Madisonville hurler, and the Lady Mustang hitters finally broke through on Bachtel in the final two frames to garner the shutout.

I went to high school way back in the last century…the 60’s, and at my small Class A school, weights weren’t even a mainstay for the football players, who were mostly hard working farm boys, by the way! In that distant, more chivalrous time, we had the audacity to think that girls were the “weaker sex”, and I seriously doubt that lifting weights any heavier than a basketball ever crossed most of their minds! However, one half of a century has come and gone since those simpler times, and girls are now, how shall I put it…tougher! Last Saturday, March 5th, this writer went to his first ever Power Lifting Meet, and it was the Lady Eagles Regional Meet, hosted by Fairfield, at the JAC, the local high school basketball arena.
