Commissioners propose tax-rate increase to balance next budget

Freestone County commissioners selected a county property-tax rate proposal during their July 29 meeting.

In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners voted to increase the rate from 35.9 cents per $100 valuation to 40.9 cents. Commissioners will vote to make the proposal official during the Aug. 21 meeting. The effective tax rate, the rate that will bring in the same revenue as the previous year, is 37.7834 cents. So, the proposed rate of 40.9 cents falls under the rollback rate of 40.9293 cents. Hitting the rollback rate would have required voter approval.

Weighing between choosing the 40.9¢ rate and a second option of 37.7¢, court members were presented with the proposed 2020 county budget. When plugging in the lower rate the budget came out to about $400,000 short of balancing, increasing the need for a higher rate.

Pending further budget review before the Aug. 21 meeting, the proposed number may either increase or decrease.
