Mexia scored with seven seconds left and dealt Fairfield a heartbreaking 50-49 loss in a District 19-4A game at Mexia on Friday night.

The teams battled back and forth in a see-saw fourth quarter. Fairfield’s Devin Cunningham sank a free throw with 37 seconds left to snap a tie and give the Eagles a 49-48 advantage.

Mexia called a timeout following the basket. The Blackcats missed a shot that would have put them ahead with 18 seconds left. Both teams fought for the rebound and the ball went out of bounds off Fairfield as Mexia retained possession.

The Blackcats worked the ball around looking for the potential game-winner. The Eagles had Mexia guard Dravion Davis closely guarded in the right corner after Davis had picked up his dribble. Davis somehow bounced a pass to LeMarrion Miller cutting to the basket and Miller converted a layup with seven seconds left to put Mexia ahead 50-49.

The Eagles called timeout and had one final chance to win the game. Cunningham dribbled up the court as precious seconds ticked away. The Fairfield guard swooped in for a layup with just three ticks left on the clock. But Miller slid over into his path. There was contact and an offensive foul was called.

Mexia inbounded the ball and the clock ran out.

Fairfield had battled back from an eight-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored the first eight points of the final stanza to tie the game, 40-40.

Cunningham drove in for a basket 21 seconds into the quarter. Jordan Gibson followed with a layup. Kobe Freeman made two free throws. D.J. Houston put in an offensive rebound to cap the run and knot the count with 6 minutes, 4 seconds left in the quarter.
