Freestone County Soldier Awarded Silver Star – WITH THE FIFTH ARMY, Italy – Private Aldrice L. Smith, son of Thomas Smith, R. 1, Wortham, listed from Fairfield, has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action during the Fifth Army invasion of Italy. Private Smith, who serves with a medical detachment of the 36th division, received the award for meritorious service on Sept. 13, 1943, in the vicinity of Altaville, Italy. During heavy enemy machinegun and artillery fire encountered by the company, four men were seriously wounded. Smith, company aid man, left his place of shelter, ran to the wounded soldiers, and administered first aid under fire. After dressing the wounds, he noticed increased intensity of machinegun and artillery fire and, single-handedly, moved each of the wounded soldiers to safe positions.
