With just two practices under its belt, the Wortham volleyball team was out of sync in its season-opener, losing to Mexia in three sets at Wortham Tuesday. Game scores were

25-16, 25-23, 25-18.

Wortham coach DeAnna Whaley said her team was not sharp in their season opener. But in addition to having just two practices, they also played without setter and team captain Jayde Hamilton, who sat out due to an injury.

My girls didn't play well tonight and had some timing issues with our hits, something that is struggling while Jayde Hamilton is out,” Whaley said. “We have only had two practices, so we are still getting back into things. Mexia did a great job on defense and we couldn't put the ball away.”

Junior Skylar Phillips stepped in at setter in Hamilton’s absence. She finished with eight assists, six digs, three service aces, two blocks and one kill.

Another junior, Megan Whaley, moved into the libero spot. She had 10 digs and helped out with passing and serve-receive.

Last year’s district Libero of the Year, Hallie Fautt, played on the net as well as on the back line. The senior had 10 digs, two service aces and one block.
