The Jonathan Hardin Chapter of the DAR had a full agenda at the April 14 meeting. In addition to the regular meeting, program, and Good Citizen and Scholarship awards, Diana Pagett McDonald presented winners of the annual DAR American History Essay contest.

The Jonathan Hardin Chapter encourages students from 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in Limestone and Freestone counties to participate in the American History Essay contest. Students in a public, private, and parochial school, or those who are home schooled are eligible. The title of the 2018 essay is “World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars.”

The students were given the following information with which to write their essay:

“The end of World War I was the beginning of a new age. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Imagine you are living in 1918. State where you are living and how the end of the war will impact your daily life. Discuss the pros and cons of the changes this War introduced to society and how you imagine those changes will impact the United States in the years to come.”

All winners received a certificate, small plaque, and a dollar prize. Winners were Klaire Kelley, 5th grade, Washington Intermediate School, Groesbeck; Emery Black, 6th grade, home school, Dew area; and Tate House, 8th grade, Fairfield Junior High School. Kelley was unable to receive her award in person because of STAAR testing, but arrangements have been made to deliver her certificate, check, and plaque. House was also unavailable because his family has moved outside the area. Black read her essay, which was enjoyed by the audience.
