FVFD battles grass fires

Four individuals helped extinguish one of two small grass fires near Cole's BBQ on FM 27 West over the weekend. Claye Pope, Bryce Howard, Sgt. Michael Douglas, and Sgt. Matt Hamilton – both Texas State Guard members of the 19th regiment 2nd BN – used whatever they had on hand to put out the fire. Pope said she used a towel to slap at the fire, while the two sergeants used their boots and Howard poured Gatorade on the flames. The two military men were on their way back to Dallas after lending a hand down south. Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department Engine 82 and Grass 86 responded, extinguishing the second small fire and establishing a fire line.
