William Cleofus (W. C.) Barger

Funeral services for Mr. W.C. Barger were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Eighth Avenue Baptist Church in Teague. Bro. Roy Prather officiated. Interment followed the services at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation was held with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Bowers Funeral Home. Mr. Barger passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia. He was born in the Cedar Community of Freestone County on November 5, 1925. He attended the Freestone School then Teague High School and graduated with the class of 1942. Mr. Barger married Zelma Rogers and shared almost 62 years of marriage together before being separated by her death in 2008. He lived in Dallas with his sister while working his first grocery job for Safeway. He returned to Teague and partnered in business with his brother, Homer, operating the Humble Service Station on Main Street. In 1953, he purchased a grocery store on the west end of Main St. in Teague and founded Barger’s Grocery. He added a location in Donie in 1971, and operated it a couple of years before selling. In 1972, he moved the original store to a new location at 600 Main St. in Teague where it remained until 1988. After the closing of his grocery store, he went to work for Ricks Funeral Home. He assisted countless bereaved familes for over 20 years for Ricks and later Bowers Funeral Home in both Teague and Jewett, as well as assisting other funeral homes in the area.
