Rufus Jackson, Sr.

Mr. Alfonzo and Mrs. Vernada Carter Jackson welcomed their newborn son, Rufus, on February 19, 1935. He was the fifth of nine children in the Jackson family and, as the hand of God would direct, he spent all of his life in the Grove Island Community. Rufus accepted Christ at the age of 13 and became a member of the Grove Island African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church under the leadership of Rev. J.E. Ross.

Rufus attended the Furney Richardson School. As a teenager he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He also participated in the New Farmers of America and exhibited his animals in county, district, and state competitions.

He even exhibited animals during the annual State Fair of Texas in Dallas. He graduated from the Furney Richardson School in May 1953.
