To open 2010 season . . . FJHS girls face Mexia

Lady Eagles volleyball players at Fairfield junior high school battled Mexia last week but, unfortunately, home court advantage didn’t apply to most of the teams.

In eighth grade A action, the ladies put up a good fight with scores of 22-25, 25-20, and 16-25.

“We have a base to build on now that we played our first game and can tell what areas need improvement,” says coach Naffie Mooney. “Overall, I saw some good plays and am confident that we will have a strong season.”

Best defensive players were Sarie Hill, Abbie Judd, and Susan Owens.

Top setter was Brooke Johnson.

Leading hitters were Jaida Smith and Caitlynn Stone.

Eighth grade B team, lead by coach Courtney Sutton, also fought hard against the Ladycats but were unable to grab a win. Game scores were 16-25 and 24-26.

Leading servers were Chasity Cribbs and Mia McWilliams. Best defensive player was Amanda Autrand.

Seventh grade A Eagles came up short in their two games, losing the match with scores of 15-25 and 18-25.

“We came up short on points, but my girls did a lot of things well,” says coach Brandy Lynch. “We are excited about this season!!”

Lead servers were Kali Butler and Destinee Carter.

Best defensive players were Colbie Cherry and Kassidy Butler.

Top setters were Lauren Cole and Ivy Robinson.

Only match win of the night goes to the seventh grade B team who put up the biggest fight of all.

The first game was tough but coach Courtney Sutton’s girls came out on top with 25-23.

The second game ended in 25-16.

Leading servers and best defensive players were Danielle German, Jennifer Reed, Erica Lyle, and Karen Moore.

The Lady Eagles play at Palestine Westwood this Thursday.
