Frosh, jv Eagles defeat Hillsboro
Fairfield high school Eagles junior varsity and freshmen football teams made it two in a row last week.
The jv squad defeated the Hillsboro Eagles 35-0 and the frosh beat the Palestine Westwood Panthers 36-6 (Hillsboro did not have a freshman team).
The Eagles jv win was made more impressive because the team scored all its points in the first half.
First touchdown came on a 58-yard run by Andre Welch and a 2-point pass play from quarterback Aaron Cain to Darius Roberts gave the Eagles a quick 8-0 lead.
Cain then connected with Will Akers for an 11- yard touchdown. The extra point kick failed, giving the FHS team a 14-0 advantage.
Welch found the endzone again on a 65-yard sprint and Jacob Judd added the extra point boot to make it 21-0.
The fourth touchdown was provided by the defensive unit when cornerback Eric Horton scooped up a loose ball and ran 48 yards to score. Judd added the extra point kick for a 28-0 tally.
Final touchdown came on a 4-yard plunge by Derek Coleman as time expired in the first half. Judd booted the extra point to provide the 35-0 winning margin.
In frosh action, Eagles fullback Alex Ward broke free on the first offensive play for a 63-yard touchdown run. Tailback Larry Rose added the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead just 25 seconds into the game.
With 2:33 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Bryson Gates intercepted a pass to stop a Panthers drive on the Eagle 30 yard line.
The Eagles tallied again on a 13-yard pass play from quarterback Jacob Gallegos to Gates. Ward added the 2-point conversion for a 16- 0 score with 8:38 remaining in the second quarter.
At the 2:07 remaining in the first half, Rose found daylight and sprinted 67 yards around the end, behind blocks by tight end Danny Cockerell and tackle Jeremiah Simpson. Cockerell kicked the extra point to give the Eagles a 23-0 lead heading into the half.
On the first defensive play of the second half, Alex Hoskins recovered a fumble on the Westwood 12 yard line, and Chris Lide scored from there on the first snap. The extra point kick failed, giving the Eagles a 29-0 lead.
Fairfield frosh capped their night on the last play of the third quarter when Rose picked up a fumble and returned the ball 40 yards for a touchdown. Cockerell split the uprights to provide the 36-0 final score.
Westwood scored its lone touchdown late in the game and missed a 2-point conversion.
Defensively, Hoskins recovered two fumbles from his tackle position and end Coy Pierce had a good night.
Coach Joey Worley reports that offensive linemen Dillon Kirkpatrick and Wyatt Curry blocked well in the game.
The Eagles host the Teague Lions this Thursday.
