Dear Editor:
I would like to thank the writer of last week’s Letter To The Editor for the history lesson she so eloquently shared with us. I am disappointed, however, that there were giant gaps in her version of the history of our country.
The Colonists came here to escape the horrendous life of taxation and tyranny, alright, but they also came because they wanted to get something for nothing. They took and grabbed from the Native American all that they had . . and in some cases they committed genocide while doing so. I can speak to this subject as a descendant of both Colonists and Native Americans.
It’s also true that they did struggle and work to build this country, but, don’t forget, a great deal of the building was done with the despicable act of slavery. Without the blood, sweat, tears and life of the enslaved black man it would have taken a lot longer.
I also can’t forget that the very state we live in was taken by force from the Mexicans. So, I guess the Colonists hadn’t heard the good lesson about taking, receiving and getting and giving or maybe they didn’t think it applied to them.
While I think that the Constitution is an excellent document, I also think its interpretation has always been a matter of one man’s opinion. It was meant to be a set of principles for this country to use as a guide in governing and I believe that it is wrong for us to try to use it when dealing with peoples and countries of differing cultures and beliefs. The Constitution is an American set of rules not a universal one.
I agree with the writer about term limits for politicians. I don’t think that being a politician should be a career path. The elected politician should be adequately paid for their work for the term served, but not for life. I am totally against corporate endorsements and mega contributions and I think that lobbying should be outlawed.
If anyone sensed anger in my last letter, consider that it may not be anger you hear as much as frustration at a growing segment of people that chooses to believe that anyone who falls into the category of needing help, is shiftless and lazy. I heard a woman (Tea Party official) not too long ago, in an interview on CNN. She was saying that she thinks that the government should send buses around to pick up people on Social Security and Disability. The idea was that they could be taken to a place to do some kind of menial labor everyday in order to justify their getting their “monthly entitlement”. Is this the kind of people with attitudes and beliefs like this, that would make this country better? I absolutely think NOT ! I also don’t think that anyone affiliated with this kind of thinking is worthy of my vote.
As far as accusing me of slander and attempting to degrade Sarah Palin, I am not alone in my criticism of this woman and I take none of what I said back. She is all that I said she was and every time she opens her mouth in public she proves my assessment of her is correct.
I guess to close this letter I will respond to the last sentence of the writer’s letter “you cannot multiply wealth by dividing it” by saying, it’s not all about wealth and if you think it is, you are, sad to say, one of the biggest problems this country has.
