The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team played a tournament and a pair of dual matches last week with mixed results.

Varsity spikers won the challenger’s bracket of the Centerville Tournament on Saturday, defeated Waco University early in the week and fell on Ferris on Friday.

“We are playing hard every game. We just have to start playing smarter,” head coach Dennis Johnson says.

Against University, the Lady Eagles won the first game 25-19, dropped the second in overtime 24-26, won the third in overtime 27-25 and lost the fourth 23-25 to set up a tie-breaker.

In the deciding fifth game, Fairfield won 15-9 to take the match.

On the front row, Robin Davis hit 14 kill shots, Melissa Lopez hit seven and Kendall Dotson had five. Miss Dotson also blocked two shots and Miss Davis blocked one.

Top servers were Ashlee McGowan (five aces) and Misses Davis, Wickens and Kathleen Chappell (four aces each).

Miss McGowan made five digs, Miss Chappell had four and Miss Davis had three.

Best all-around player in the match was Miss Dotson.

The match with Ferris also went five games, but did not end in the Lady Eagles’ favor.

Fairfield lost the first game 23-25, won the next two handily 25-15, 25-13 and dropped the fourth 22- 25 to go to the tie-breaker, which Ferris took 15-9.

Miss Davis hit 13 kill shots, Miss Lopez had five and Miss Chappell and Amy Lansford hit three each.

Setting up assists were Miss Wickens, 15, Miss Chappell, five, and Miss Wooten, four.

From the serving line, Miss McGowan hit three aces and Misses Davis and Chappell hit two each.

Misses Dotson and Davis each blocked a shot, while Misses McGowan and Davis made three digs each.

Top all-around player was Miss Lopez.

In pool play at Centerville, the Lady Eagles lost to Normangee and Goodrich, then beat Elkhart.

Facing New Waverly in the first bracket match, Fairfield spikers claimed a win in two games 25-22, 25-21.

Middle blocker Miss Davis hit eight kill shots, Miss Chappell hit four and Miss Lopez had three, with assists provided by Miss Wickens, 13, Miss Wooten, four, and Miss Chappell, two.

Miss Wickens served three aces and Erica Flori hit 13 serves without a miss.

On defense, Misses Davis and Dotson blocked three shots each, while Miss McGowan made six digs and Misses Flori, Wickens and Davis had two each.

All-around player was Miss Chappell.

In the second round against Coolidge, the Lady Eagles won the first game 25-12, dropped the second 22-25 and won the third 25-11.

On the front row, Miss Lansford hit eight kill shots, Miss Davis had four, Miss Lopez hit three and Miss Dotson hit two.

Assists were provided by Miss Wickens, eight, and Miss Wooten, six.

Serving three aces was Miss Davis, while Misses Chappell, Wooten and Wickens got two aces each.

Defensively, Misses McGowan and Flori made six digs each and Miss Davis had three.

Best all-around player was Miss Davis.

The Lady Eagles lost to district rival Madisonville in the third round 25-13, 19-25, 22-25, to finish second in the challenger’s bracket.

Kill shot leaders were Miss Davis, seven, Miss Lopez, three, and Misses Lansford, Dotson and Fruncheska Daniels, three each.

Providing assists were Miss Wickens, nine, Miss Wooten, four, and Miss Chappell, two.

On defense, Miss McGowan made four digs, Miss Davis had three and Miss Flori made two, while Miss Davis blocked two shots and Miss Dotson blocked one.

Hitting 20 good serves in the match was Miss Flori, and Miss McGowan served seven.

Fairfield was scheduled to host Brownsboro early this week, play Friday at Hillsboro and host Franklin on Tuesday.
