Against Ferris Yellowjackets . . . Frosh, jv gridders get wins
Freshmen and junior varsity football teams at Fairfield high school started the 2010 season right by securing a win each over the Ferris Yellowjackets.
The Eagles subvarsity squads kicked off the season last Thursday on the road.
In jv action, the jv blanked the Yellowjackets 29-0, scoring on offense and defense.
First touchdown came on a 28-yard run by Andre Welch which capped a 62- yard drive. Welch added the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
The Eagles’ defensive unit got in on the scoring action when a bad snap on a punt sailed over the punter’s head and he was tackled in the endzone by a host of Fairfield players. The safety provided two more points.
A 55-yard drive was capped when quarterback Aaron Cain hit Will Akers for a 28-yard touchdown pass play.
On the next Fairfield possession, Welch scampered 65 yards off the left side to score to compete a 77-yard scoring drive. The extra point kick missed the mark but the Eagles held a 22-0 lead.
The score almost was more in the first half, which ended with the Eagles on the two yard line.
Eagles defensive players held the Yellowjackets on downs their first possession of the second half and the offense immediately scored.
On their first offensive snap of the second half, Welch broke free for an 85- yard Eagles touchdown, his third of the night.
Kicker Jacob Judd added the point-after kick, bringing the score to 29-0.
“We threw and caught the ball pretty good and the line did a great job opening holes for Welch and the other backs,” coach Dan Roberson says.
Quarterbacking duties were handled well by Cain.
“As good as the offense played, the defense, led by Dalton Barker, Hayden Hill and Deonte Carr, totally shut down the Jacket offense,” Roberson points out.
The frosh Eagles picked up a 6-0 win in their first outing of the year.
Running back Alex Ward set up the touchdown with a 40-yard run to the one in the second quarter and Larry Rose punched the ball into the endzone.
Coach Joey Worley reports that Ward and Chris Lide ran the ball well and quarterback Jacob Gallegos completed two passes, one a 35-yard shot to Lide.
Gallegos also intercepted a pass from his cornerback position on defense.
Standout defensive player was tackle Alex Hoskins.
The jv and frosh squads host the Hillsboro Eagles this Thursday.
