Closings set Monday for Labor Day
Most Fairfield area businesses, county government offices, post offices and schools will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.
Students at Teague, Fairfield, Dew and Wortham schools get their first school holiday Monday, and city and county offices will also be closed.
Grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores will remain open, as will The Fairfield Recorder offices. Regular deadlines will be maintained.
The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated Sept. 5, 1882 in New York City. Form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”, followed by a festival for the workers and their families.
Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of summer.
