60th anniversary . . . Fairfield couple celebrates

MR. AND MRS. BILL FLEETWOOD MR. AND MRS. BILL FLEETWOOD Celebrating 60 years of marriage last month were W.A. “Bill” and Mary Fleetwood of Fairfield.

The couple was married on Aug. 26, 1950 in Houston, TX where they lived and worked for many years before moving to Fairfield in the 1980s.

Mrs. Fleetwood has previously served as R.O.T.C. sponsor at Jeff Davis high school in Houston, was the first policewoman to serve at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, was a graphic artist for Pasadena school district, and is a portrait artist.

She is also the author of faith book “Between Heaven and Earth” and is currently on a book signing tour throughout California, Florida, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas.

Fleetwood attended Baylor University from 1948 to 1952 on a basketball scholarship. In 1950, the team went to the “final four” in the NCAA playoffs and finished fourth in the nation.

He graduated Baylor with a Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) degree and Sam Houston State University with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree and a teaching certificate.

Fleetwood served as a teacher at Galena Park high school in Pasadena in 1961, school registrar at North Shore high school in the Houston area from 1962-1966 and director of business in the Pasadena school district from 1966 to 1981.

He is also a lifetime member of Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO).

After moving to Fairfield, he became the superintendent of Dew ISD of which he retired in 1989.

The couple has four children, Deitra O’Neill, 58, of Humble; Darlene Twitty, 57, of Teague; Cheri Jennings, 54, of Lorena; and William Riddell, 38, of Streetman.
