FOR THE SECOND TIME of the night, Eagles senior tailback Robert Durham crosses the goal line on a short yardage play in a 35-17 season opening win over the Ferris Yellowjackets. Durham rushed for 146 yards on the night. With a season opening win under their belts, the Fairfield high school Eagles hit the road to Hillsboro this week to face another flock of Eagles.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“Hillsboro is going to be a good test. They are pretty athletic,” FHS head coach Darrell Piske says.

As Fairfield was taking a 35-17 victory over Ferris last week, Hillsboro was shutout 12-0 by Clifton.

The Hillsboro squad was held to 40 yards total offense, 22 on the ground and 18 through the air.

The FHS Eagles tallied 386 offensive yards against Ferris, 278 on the ground and 108 through the air.

Hillsboro returns just two offensive and five defensive starters from a team that went 2-7 a year ago.

The other Eagles run their offense out of a spread and wing-T formation and Piske reports thay have a good running back and good fullback.

Fullback Brian Cosby, a senior, and junior halfback Juan Lince both possess 4.8 speed and weigh 190 and 170 pounds, respectively.

Defensively, Piske says Hillsboro is quick to the football.

“They have two safeties who are very active and will hit you in the mouth,” the FHS coach says.

The team, Piske points out, has decent size and is athletic.

Hillsboro is in District 8-AAA.

For the Fairfield coaching staff, one of the main jobs this week is to keep their charges focused on the task ahead, not on the win last week.

“We have to keep our heads and handle success,” Piske says. “We will try to improve each week and get better for district.”

He also points out that of primary importance is to execute the game plan, instead of playing the opponents’ game.

Opening week through District 20-AAA saw Groesbeck fall to Rogers 42-39, Mexia beat China Spring 45-31, Palestine Westwood lose to Tyler Chapel Hill 50-10, Palestine fall to Brownsboro 20-14 and Madisonville lose to Navasota 35-14.

Results from non district opponents the Eagles have yet to face were a 24- 21 Teague victory over Mildred, 47-0 shutout of Rusk by Center and a 13-12 Kemp win over Eustace.
