Business owner draws indictment

A Fairfield business owner and former civic club leader faces felony charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child.

Indicted on those separate charges by the Freestone county grand jury last week is Landis Eugene Bayless, 56.

Bayless is the owner or partner in three Fairfield businesses and is immediate past president of Fairfield Rotary Club.

He is free of jail on bonds totaling $35,000.

Of charges on which the grand jury returned felony indictments, five were complaints of aggravated sexual assault or indecency with a child.

Other indictments alledge possession of marijuana, driving while intoxicated, attempting to take a weapon from a law enforcement officer, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, burglary, theft, assault family violence, tampering with physical evidence, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and forgery.

The charges against Bayless date back to 1993 and are lodged by a stepdaughter who is now an adult.

Also indicted by the grand jury are:

—George Leman Graham, 32, of Oklahoma City, Okla. on a July 21 complaint of possession of more than four ounces of marijuana.

—Enrique Luis Uribe, 34, of Dallas on a charge of felony DWI on July 19. The indictment lists four prior DWI convictions.

—Stephen Christopher McCormick, 24, of Streetman on a pair of Aug. 1 charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14.

—George Thomas Abbott, 23, of Wortham on a complaint of attempting to take a weapon from a law enforcement officer on July 14.

—Kathy Busby Collins, 37, of Wortham on a July 23 complaint of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

—Mary Ruth Gross, aka Mary Ruth Hamilton, 46, of Sprint on a charge of felony DWI on June 25. The indictment lists four prior DWI convictions.

—Rene Trejo Ramirez, aka Ruben Torres Ageda, 41, of Fairfield on a July 4 charge of felony driving while intoxicated. The indictement lists two prior DWI convictions.

—Thomas Scherillo, 54, of Fairfield on a complaint of burglary of a building of Justin Bounds on July 10.

—Jose Antonio Young, 42, of Mission on a Jan. 1, 1997, charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14.

—Jeffery Lynn Steen, 46, of Teague on a charge of felony DWI. The indictment lists three prior DWI convictions.

—John David Crundwell of Teague on an April 28 complaint of forgery, allegedly a $155 check on a bank account of Joy Crundwell.

—John David Crundwell of Teague on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, allegedly striking Lex Ryder on the head with a drill on Aug. 1.
