Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity spikers played
match against Waco Connally last week and six matches over the weekend in the Leon Tournament.
The full schedule helps head coach Dennis Johnson rebuild a squad that returned only two players with much varsity playing time.
“We’re inconsistent. It’s like we are on a roller coaster,” the coach says.
“But, we are improving,” he adds.
Early in the week the Lady Eagles hosted the Connally Cadettes and took the match to four games before dropping the decision 25-27, 23-25, 25-15, 12-25.
On the front row, senior Robin Davis hit 16 kill shots and sophomore Amy Lansford hit five, with 18 assists provided by senior Shelby Wickens and six from senior Mackenzie Wooten.
Miss Wickens served three aces and sophomore Kathleen Chappell had one ace, while junior Ashlee McGowan and sophomore Katie Berger made five digs each. Misses McGowan and Berger shared the defensive libero jersey.
All-around player honors went to Miss Wickens.
In the Leon tourney, the Lady Eagles took third place in the challengers’ bracket.
The tourney started with pool play to seed teams for bracket competition. Fairfield finished third in its pool, playing Lorena, Leon and Cayuga.
Against Lorena in the pool opener, the FHS squad fell in two games 17-25, 22- 25.
Top front row players were Miss Davis, eight kills, and sophomore Melissa Lopez, three kills, with assists proved by Miss Wickens, seven, and Miss Chappell, four.
Defensively, Miss Davis made four digs and Miss McGowan had three, and Miss Davis hit three aces while Miss Chappell did not miss a serve.
Picking up all-around honors was Miss Davis.
Playing an always tough Leon team, the Lady Eagles fell in two games 15-25, 9- 25.
Miss Davis hit four kill shots and Miss Lansford hit one, with Miss Wickens setting up two assists.
Defensive standout was Miss Davis, best servers were Misses Davis and Chappell, and Miss Davis was best all-around.
Rounding out pool play, the Lady Eagles defeated Cayuga in three games 25- 15, 20-25, 25-21.
Hitting kill shots were Miss Davis, 11; Miss Lansford, six; and senior Kendall Dotson, five. Miss Wickens provided nine assists and Miss Wooten made seven.
From the serving line, Miss Wooten hit three aces and Miss McGowan hit one.
Defensively, Miss Davis made 11 digs, Miss McGowan had 10 and Miss Berger had seven.
Best all-around player against Cayuga was Miss McGowan.
Fairfield faced Richards in the first bracket match, winning in two games 25-13, 25-10.
On the front row, Miss Davis hit five kill shots, Miss Lopez hit three and Miss Lansford had two. Providing assists were Miss Wickens, five; Miss Chappell, four; and Miss Wooten, three.
Miss Chappell served seven aces and Miss Wickens had two.
Five digs were credited to Miss Davis and Miss McGowan made one.
Best all-around player was Miss Chappell.
In second round bracket action, the Lady Eagles fell to Normangee in two games 15-25, 19-25.
Kill shots were hit by Miss Davis, seven; Miss Dotson, four; Miss Lopez, three; and Miss Lansford, two. Setting up assists were Miss Wickens, 10, and Miss Wooten, two.
Miss Wooten served a pair of aces and Miss Chappell hit one, while, defensively, Miss Davis made four digs and Miss Berger made two.
All-around honors were earned by Miss Wickens.
Playing for third place in the challengers’ bracket, Fairfield beat Cayuga in two games 25-22, 25-12.
Front row play saw Miss Davis hit 11 kill shots, Miss Dotson hit six, Miss Chappell get five and Miss Lansford hit four.
Assist leaders were Miss Wickens, 15, and Miss Wooten, three.
On defense, senior Erica Flori made five digs and Miss Chappell made two.
Top servers were Miss Wickens, three aces, and Miss Flori, one ace.
All-around top player was Miss Dotson.
The Lady Eagles were scheduled to host Waco University early this week, play the Centerville Tournament on Thursday and Saturday, host Ferris on Friday and host Brownsboro on Tuesday.
