In recycling drive . . . Electric gear harvested

ABOUT 2,500 POUNDS of office and household electronic products were collected during the first annual county-wide electronics recycle drive. ABOUT 2,500 POUNDS of office and household electronic products were collected during the first annual county-wide electronics recycle drive. About 2,500 pounds of used electronics, primarily computers and accessories, were collected during the first Freestone County Electronics Recycle Drive.

The event was sponsored this month by Fairfield ISD Recycle Team and Fairfield History Club who judged it a success.

Purpose of the drive was to keep electronics items out of landfills.

Electonics consist of valuable resources, such as precious metals and engineered plastics that require

considerable amount of energy to process and manufacture.

Recycling electonics recovers the materials, conserves resources and results in lower environmental emissions.

Recycling a million desktop computers prevents the release of greenhouse gasses equivalent to the annual emissions of 16,000 passenger cars.

About 50 county residents brought items to be recycled.

Drive volunteers were Patricia Tate, Sandra McLeod and Betty Trask from the history club, and Katie Wade, Carol McCully, Elizabeth Partain, Kerry Hand, Renea Worley and Nicole Crawford of the recycle team.

Another electronics recycle drive will be held in spring.
