County hosting Cow Congress

The 2010 Cow Country Congress will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, at one of the F.E. Hill Company ranch locations in Freestone county.

Sponsors of the event are Texas Agricultural Extension Service offices beef and forage committees in Freestone, Walker, Madison, Houston, Trinity and Leon counties.

The annual event rotates within the group of host counties.

In addition to the traditional 7-county area, beef producers from outside these counties are invited to attend the educational program.

Participants have opportunities to visit with a variety of commercial exhibitors between presentations, demonstrations and tours of the host property.

F.E. Hill Company is a multifaceted agricultural business known for quality hay production, intensive beef herd management, land management that reduces production costs and wildlife management.

Topics set for discussion during the congress are new methods in feral hog control, wildlife diversification on the ranch, fly control in the cow herd and cattle genetics.

A live cattle handling demonsration will be provided along with a discussion by the Luminant Big Brown Complex Reclaim Team.

The site for the event is on land reclaimed from lignite coal mining operations in the area.

Program registration starts at 8:15 a.m. and the program starts at 8:45 a.m.

Anyone planning to attend should register in advance with TAES office in one of the seven counties.

Registration is $10 a person and includes a barbecue lunch.

Participants earn two hours of continuing education credit that may be applied to renewal of pesticide applicators’ licenses.

An additional 1.5 hours of continuing education credit will be given toward Beef Quality Assurance recertification.
