High temperatures still but the Weatherman says a cold front headed our way……No, no, not that cold!….. It'll just dip us down into the 90's for a few days. But, that'll be just fine with all of us…..Sure beats the sound of those triple digits. Electricity at our house off a few days ago for four hours…..A wonderful sound when that Air Conditioner Compressor suddenly kicked on when they got the juice back flowing! A few days ago I was describing how folks used to combat heat before AC was the norm….My folks were all farmers in a very rural area……I well recall, before the invention of Igloo type insulated water cans, wrapping burlap sacks around a one gallon glass jug with baling wire, filling it to the top, capping it, and then, and this is the important part, dipping the whole thing down in a water trough, getting the burlap completely saturated with water, and letting whatever breeze would blow to evaporate the wetted burlap surface. The same process, less a fan motor, as an evaporative cooler……Folks, I don't know why I mentioned this, it just popped into my mind and my fingers started moving! Anyway, not nearly as cooling as having a big block of ice in the middle of the can, but it sure beat nothing at all. Those were the days of Bib Overalls, brogan shoes, floppy straw hats, two-cylinder green tractors, four cylinder red ones and Cokes came in 6 1/2 ounce bottles.

Dispatcher Retha shared a funny story…..A bagpiper in Kentucky was requested to play his pipes at a funeral service for a homeless man. This was in a very rural area with which he was unacquainted. He left for the service in plenty of time, fully kilted, knobby knees a-shining, but then got lost. Being a man, he refused to stop and ask directions…..He finally arrived, but the service had ended, the hearse gone, the Funeral Director nowhere in sight, only men with shovels, busily at work following the service. Resolving to perform as he'd said he would, he exited his car, puffed up the 'pipes and started playing those skirling, trilling tunes…..The men with the shovels already had the vault lid in place but ceased their shovelfuls of dirt as he approached, playing. Respectfully, they removed their hats, bowed their heads and stood as a group while the piper went through his chosen selections at graveside. The piper played out his heart and soul, despondent over missing the service at the graveside, trying to make it up as best as he could. He played his heart out. He closed out his repertoire with "Amazing Grace" and viewed the men gathered 'round begin to weep. The piper finished, walked slowly to his car and started putting his pipes in their carrying case. As he was closing the rear door he overheard one of the men say, " I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years!"

Until Next Week . . . RALPH BILLINGS
