Dear Editor:
This letter is in response to two separate comments from local Republicans. The first was Doug Sanford’s comment in another publication that “There are no conservative Democrats.” I am a Democrat with conservative values and one who would like to see all politicians, both Democrat and Republican, held responsible for spending our tax dollars wisely—-a fiscal conservative.
I do fit Webster’s definition of a Liberal on some issues—-”broad minded, tolerant; a political party . .
assiciated with individual and economic freedom, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional, political and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives.”
Why do Republicans band the word Liberal around like it is a dirty word? Could it be because they are the opposite—- narrow minded, intolerant; and part of a political party who is more interested in money than people and who would like to keep the rich as the “ruling class?”
And since when did the Christian principle of caring for those less fortunate become Socialism? Republicans think that if they use that word enough, people will be led like sheep to believe their “dribble.”
Another Republican called our Democratic candidate for governor, Bill White, a Liberal because he “made Houston a sanctuary city when he was mayor.” When I told her that it did not bother me, she was visibly angry.
I don’t understand a Republican party that campaigned on “family values,” but nominated a presidential candidate who cheated on his first wife with the woman who would have been our First Lady if he had been elected. Most families of “illegal immigrants” have more family values than that; they work hard and take care of their families. Mexicans are not our enemies, and hatred is not a family value.
