Tax-free weekend starts Friday

Texas shoppers get a break from sales taxes this weekend during the state’s annual tax holiday.

The event, targeted at back-to-school shopping, runs Friday-Sunday.

As in prior years, most clothing and footwear priced under $100 is exempt from sales taxes this week, which saves shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

Backpacks under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students also are exempt. The exemption includes backpacks with wheels, provided they can also be worn on the back, and messenger bags.

Not exempted from taxes are luggage, briefcases, athletic/ duffle bags, computer bags, purses or framed backpacks.

As many as 10 backpacks can be bought tax free at a time.

Tax free clothing includes baby clothes, belts with attached buckles, cowboy and hiking boots, caps/hats, coats, diapers, dresses, gloves, gym clothes, hooded shirts and sweatshirts, hosiery, jackets, jeans, football and baseball jerseys, jogging wear, neckwear, pajamas, pants and trousers, robes, raincoats, shirts, shoes, socks, shorts, suits, slacks and jackets, sweatshirts, sweat suits, sweaters, swimsuits, underclothes, work clothes and unforms.

Items that will still be taxed include hair accessories, wallets, watches, baseball cleats and pants, belt buckles, climbing, fishing, rubber and ski boots, buttons and zippers, fabrics, football pants, golf gloves, handbags and purses, handkerchiefs, hard hats, helmets, ice skates, jewelry, leather goods, sports pads, life jackets, rented clothing, roller blades and skates, safety clothing and bicycle, bowling and golf shoes.

A number of school supply items can be bought tax free this weekend, provided items are individually priced under $100.

On the tax free school supply list are: binders, book bags, calculators, cellophane tape, blackboard chalk, compasses, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, highlighters, index cards and boxes, legal pads, lunch boxes, markers, notebooks, paper, pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, pencils, pens, protractors, rulers, scissors and writing tablets.
