LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The voters and taxpayers of the former Lone Star Rural High School district are working diligently gathering petition signatures to present to Oakwood ISD, Buffalo and Centerville ISDs. This petition requests that the Trustees of the school districts proceed with separating the Lone Star district from Oakwood and divide it between Buffalo and Centerville school districts. If you have seen the map of the school districts, you realize that Lone Star is not contiguous with Oakwood ISD.
We appreciate the widespread support of the local communities for our position. In addition, please talk to individual Trustees of your School Board and express your support for the detachment and annexation of the Lone Star district. We believe our effort to join the districts closest to where our students reside will provide an overall better environment for gaining the educational, social and economic opportunities available to them.
We also encourage the support of voters of the Oakwood School District who feel that our petition is in the best interest of students from both sides of the district. There are options available to the eastern portion of Oakwood ISD that would provide opportunities to students attending Oakwood Elementary and High School. Realigning the boundaries to put all students in schools closer to their residence offers the same educational, social and economic opportunities we are seeking for the Lone Star students.
After receiving the formal petition, the Board of Trustees of each school district is required to hold a public hearing that will help the School Boards make a final decision on the voters’ request. This fall look for notification of the hearing dates from the school districts. Plan to attend and voice your support to the Trustees. The Lone Star district respectfully asks the three school districts to resolve this 40 year old action that has alienated long time friends and family.
Respectfully, Barbara Johnson
