Monday evening east of Fairfield . . . Wreck claims 2 county residents
REGGIE MORTON
Two Freestone county residents died Monday evening when their car was struck by a tractor-trailer rig while attempting a Uturn on U.S. 84 east of Fairfield.
Driver of the tractortrailer was not injured.
Victims are Reggie Rene Morton, 20, driver of a KIA Rio compact sedan, and passenger Jasmine Sha Don Gordon, 20.
Morton was a 2009 graduate of Fairfield high school and Miss Gordon had attended FHS.
The wreck occured about a mile west of Fairfield at about 5:40 p.m.
Department of Public Safety Sgt. Phillip Davis reports the Morton vehicle was westbound on U.S. 84, pulled over to the shoulder of the road and started a Uturn into the path of a westbound tractor-trailer rig driven by Jose Ramirez Garcia, 38, of Fort Worth.
The truck hit the car on the driver’s side, knocking the vehicle 75-100 yards until it came to rest partially upside down in a creek on the south side of the highway, Davis says.
JASMINE GORDON
The sergeant reports that tire skid marks at the scene indicate Garcia attempted to stop the truck prior to the collision.
Morton and Miss Gordon were pronounced dead at the scene by Peace Justice Theresa Farris, precinct one.
Investigating the wreck are DPS Trooper Michael Adams of Fairfield and DPS Criminal Vehicle Enforcement troopers John Franks and Rick Pringle of Leon county.
