Mexia man killed in county shooting
A Mexia man died last week in a shooting at a residence near Teague after a physical altercation with the homeowner.
Pronounced dead at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield early Wednesday morning was Daguberto Castro, 26.
Sheriff Ralph Billings reports that Castro sustained three gunshot wounds.
Arrested and charged with murder is Evan C. DeVillier, 25. He is free of jail on $50,000 bond.
The incident occurred late Tuesday, Aug. 3; sheriff’s deputies were summoned to the scene at 11:21 p.m. when Devillier’s wife, Crystal, placed a 9-1-1 emergency call.
Reported in the 9-1-1 call was that there was a disturbance at a residence on FM 1365 west of Teague and that shots had been fired.
When deputies arrived seven minutes after the emergency call, they found a man on the ground, identified as Castro, with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was taken by Teague ambulance to ETMC where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy has been ordered by Peace Justice Theresa Farris, precinct one.
The sheriff reports that the altercation occurred when a car load of people, which included the driver and four passengers, drove up to the DeVillier residence late Tuesday.
Words were exchanged between DeVillier and occupants and the disturbance turned into a physical confrontation, Billings says.
The sheriff explains that several family members live in residences on the property and that the car load of people, which included some DeVillier family members, had been driving around the property.
Sometime during the altercation, the sheriff reports that DeVillier retrieved a handgun and shot Castro.
Deputies recovered a Smith and Wesson 9-millimeter handgun at the scene.
Deputies, a Texas Ranger and personnel with the Department of Public Safety portable crime lab are participating in the shooting investigation.
