TWC figures show . . . Unemployment rate rises
Unemployment rate in Freestone county rose to 6.9 percent in June, latest figures from Texas Workforce Commission show, but remains well below the 8.2 percent rate posted for Texas.
In May, unemployment in Freestone county was 6.7 percent.
The June mark shows that out of a total labor force of 10,251, there were 711 workers unemployed.
Statewide, one million workers are jobless out of a total labor force of 12.18 million.
Texas unemployment dropped from 8.3 percent in May.
“Texas employment has grown every month in 2010,” TWC chairman Tom Pauken says. “Notably, Texas employers in goods producing industries added jobs in the month of June, which included gains in manufacturing, construction and mining and logging.”
The education and health services industry recorded the highest increase in June, with 8,900 jobs added, followed by professional and business services, which increased by 8,600 jobs.
Although unemployment decreased statewide, it rose in June for Freestone and adjoining counties.
Highest rate in the area, 9.8 percent, is posted for Anderson county and is an increase from 9.2 percent in May. Out of a labor force of 21,413, there are 2,106 workers without jobs.
Close behind Anderson county is Navarro county, with a June unemployment rate of 9.7 percent, showing 2,103 workers jobless out of a total labor force of 21,6-8. The May jobless rate in Navarro county was 9.0 percent.
Limestone county posts a 7.3 percent June unemployment rate with 858 persons jobless from a total labor force of 11,808. May rate was 6.7 percent.
June unemployment rate in Leon county is 7.7 percent, up from 7.3 percent in May. Out of a labor force of 8,685, there are 666 workers jobless.
The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area had the lowest unemployment rate in Texas at 5.9 percent and the rate in Amarillo MSA was 6.0 percent.
McAllen-Edinburg-Mission MSA posts a June unemployment rate of 12.2 percent.
