For alumni players . . . Corsicana hosts football

Former high school football players from Fairfield and the surrounding area can suit up again when Texas Alumni Football comes to Corsicana in October.

TAF is seeking to attract enough players to field 17 teams, each of which will play an alumni team from a rival school.

The games are open to all alumni and ages of the players ranges from 19 to mid-40s.

“For many guys, football is the biggest thing in the world in high school and then it’s taken away forever. People tell us all the time about how they’ve literally dreamed about the chance to play again,” says Tim Bishop, TAF director.

Based in Austin, the organization has suited up more than 1,500 former West Texas high school football players in places such as Odessa, Seminole, Sweetwater and Big Spring. The games have been popular with players and fans.

“We’ve heard from several West Texas towns that the biggest crowd they ever had was for the alumni game,” Bishop says.

More than 3,000 fans came out to watch alumni games at Class AA schools Crane and Big Lake earlier this year.

Schools keep half of presale ticket proceeds and concession revenues.

“We raised over $3,000 for our Project Graduation through the alumni games and it was an overall very positive event for our community,” Crane school superintendent Larry Lee says.

Former players can sign up at www.AlumniFootballUSA. com, or by calling Bishop at 512-771-5561.

Fans and players can link to individual team Facebook pages at the web site to discuss rivalries, players, games and other high school memories.
