Sales tax funds continue to slide

Sales tax revenue received by the City of Fairfield in July falls for the 11th consecutive month, but the drop is less than 10 percent.

The city is reimbursed $131,347 this month, down 9.7 percent from the $145,475 received last July.

The July payment does push Fairfield over the $1 million mark for the year, a month later than it reached that level in 2009.

For the year, Fairfield has received $1.1 million in sales tax revenue, a 25.35 percent decrease from the $1.47 million reimbursed during the same period last year.

July checks mailed by the Texas Comptroller reflect taxes collected on May retail sales and reported in June.

Checks totaling $297 million were mailed this month to the 1,139 cities that collect the optional levy, a 4.52 percent increase from the $37.1 million reimbursed last July.

Statewide payments are down 2.9 percent this year, totaling $2.2 billion.

Teague shows a 21.09 percent drop in its sales tax reimbursement this month, receiving $32,911 compared to $41,710.

Payments to Teague this year are $283,341, down 16.88 percent from the $340,896 reimbursed the first seven months of 2009.

Wortham receives $6,594 this month, a 7.5 percent increase from the $6,134 reimbursed last July. For the year, payments are up 6.05 percent, from $60,893 to $64,580.

Streetman is reimbursed $2,883 this month, up 10.72 percent from the $2,604 received last July. Payments this year total $23,151, a 46.78 percent rise from the $15,771 received during the same period in 2009.

Communities in Anderson county receive checks totaling $441,487, a 2.79 percent increase from the $429,471 reimbursed last July. Payments for the year are down 8.76 percent, from $3.69 million to $3.36 million.

Payments in Leon county total $109,582, up 3.49 percent from the July 2009 total of $105,881. For the year sales tax reimbursements are down 17 percent, from $906,632 to $752,419.

Limestone county communities are reimbursed $256,613 this month, down 4.52 percent from the $268,779 received last July. Payments this year are down 6.98 percent, from $2.02 million to $1.88 million.

In Navarro county, sales tax payments total $416,660 this month, an 8.54 percent increase from the $383,874 reimbursed last July. For the year, payments are down 1.2 percent, from $3.07 million to $3.03 million.

Largest sales tax reimbursement check this month, $37.5 million, goes to the City of Houston and reflects a .92 percent increase from a year ago.

Dallas receives $15.9 million, up 6.41 percent over last July.
