Exemptions trim murder jury panel
A panel of prospective Freestone county jurors called for selection in a capital murder trial in 87th District Court has already been cut by about 100 names.
District Clerk Janet Chappell reports that out of 350 prospective jurors called for selection, only 254 are left on the list.
The reduction in jurors comes from automatic exemptions and notices that were undelivered because the person moved.
Automatic exemptions are granted to those who are parents of a child under the age of 15 who lives at home, over 70 years of age, caretakers for the elderly, active military personnel and to persons who are in poor health.
Jurors are being called for the capital murder trial of Oscar R. Doster, charged in the 2005 death of Freestone county ranch owner Dennis Courtney.
Also charged with capital murder in Courtney’s death is James Harnage, who is awaiting trial.
The two men were escapees from an Alabama jail when the Freestone county murder was committed.
Doster was arrested about two weeks later in California and Harnage was arrested at the same time in Nevada.
After their arrests, the pair was returned to Alabama and Doster was sentenced to death in a capital murder trial.
Prospective jurors report to the Fairfield Civic Center at 9 a.m. Monday. The civic center in W.L. Moody Reunion Grounds is being used because the district courtroom is not large enough.
Questionnaires will be presented to prospective jurors and are to be filled out to give prosecuting and defense attorneys information for selecting a 12- member jury and two alternates.
Jury selection gets underway on Thursday, July 22. Six prospects are to be called each day for a week, then eight per day will be called until the panel is filled.
