History Club to host 85th gala

Fairfield History Club celebrates its 85th anniversary Saturday evening with a formal dinner and program at the historic Moody-Bradley House.

The club was founded in 1925 by 17 women for “intellectual improvement and social pleasure.”

First meeting, and for several years thereafter, was held in the first floor women’s restroom at the Freestone county courthouse—-county officials would not let them meet in any other room.

The club finally moved to a cinder block building on W. Main Street, and in 1967 acquired the Moody-Bradley House built in 1860 by Col. W.L. Moody.

History Club has been a driving force in Fairfield community affairs, notably starting the Fairfield public library and taking a leading role in public health projects and community beautification.

The 85th anniversary dinner is at 7 p.m. with menu choices of steak or chicken Cordon Bleu.

Guest speaker is LaDonna Gatlin, sister of the Grammy Award-winning Gatlin Brothers.

A keynote speech of the History Club Story is to be given by club member Lisa Tate Akers.

Special guests attending the event include Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs president Dorothy Roberts of Aransas Pass, TFWC past president Patricia Siegfreid-Giles of Lancaster and TFWD past district president Shawnee Harding of Waxahachie.
