FFA and 4-H showmen benefit . . . Livestock sale to top $336,000
FAIRFIELD 4-H CLUB MEMBER Brady Johnson sold the Freestone County Fair grand champion steer for $10,000 to Anadarko Petroleum, represented by Buzz Hamilton.
Bidders paid $307,325 at auction Saturday morning to buy 130 top animals exhibited throughout the week at the Freestone County Fair by FFA and 4- H members.
In addition to the bid amount, contributors provided more than $30,000 in add-on money—-the amount is still being calculated— to bring the sale total up to more than $337,325.
Although successful, that is a little shy of the $351,800 in bids and addons for the 2009 junior livestock sales and is, perhaps, a sign of the economy.
Top price paid for an animal brought into the sale ring of the Ike Carden Pavilion was the grand champion steer sold by Fairfield 4-H member Brady Johnson for $10,000 to Anadarko Petroleum.
Price paid for the grand champion steer matched the 2009 bid.
FAIRFIELD FFA MEMBER Eli Pratt sold his grand champion pen of rabbits for $2,500 to NRG Limestone Project Employees’ Fund, represented by Travis Miller.
The sale started with the dozen grand champion and reserve grand champion market animals.
Fairfield FFA member Cory Black sold his grand champion hog, the second animal on the auction block, to XTO for $5,000.
The grand champion lamb shown by Fairfield FFA member Maecy Mannen brought a winning bid of $3,500 from Russell and Sons Construction.
Buying the grand champion goat shown by Kaycee Sessum of Fairfield was Lone Star Chevrolet, paying $2,000.
Teague FFA member Kirt Murphy received $2,800 from Lone Star Grill and Cantina for his grand champion pen of broilers.
A winning bid of $2,500 from NRG Limestone Plant Employees’ Fund bought the grand champion pen of rabbits from Fairfield FFA member Eli Pratt.

Second highest price bid at the auction, $6,250 made by Buffalo Livestock Commission, bought the reserve champion steer shown by Emily Holmes of Freestone 4-H.
Valence Operating paid $4,800 to buy the reserve grand champion hog shown by Cullen Phillips of Dew 4-H.
Teague FFA member Lance Watson sold his reserve grand champion lamb for $2,000 to Teague Buyers’ Group No. 1.
The reserve grand champion goat shown by Cooper Blackwell of Dew 4- H brought $1,975 at auction from Brookshire Brothers of Fairfield and Teague.
A winning bid of $2,000 from Bush’s Chicken bought the reserve grand champion pen of broilers shown by John Lindsey of Eagle Country 4-H.
Rounding out the champions list was the reserve grand champion pen of rabbits shown by Jeffery Wood of Fairfield FFA, which sold for $2,000 to Encana Oil and Gas.
A WINNING BID OF $2,000 from Lone Star Chevrolet bought the grand champion goat from Fairfield FFA showman Kaycee Sessum. Representing Lone Star is James Grant.
The livestock auction was preceded by a prize giveaway by Wortham 4-H Club and cake auction.
Wortham 4-H prize winners were: Tony McAdams, picnic table; Ed Pitts, a “fun in the sun” package; and Corey Hale, gift basket.
A red velvet cake offered by Freestone county 4-H adult leaders sold twice at auction for a total of $350.
Fairfield 4-H Club awarded a $250 cash prize to Bosque Monico.
Freestone County Go- Texan Committee sold a signed print at auction for $200 to Kristie Oats.
To get buyers in the mood to bid, Fairfield Young Farmers hosted a buyer’s breakfast early Saturday morning at the fairgrounds.
