Stock sale set Saturday . . . Fair enters its second half

The Freestone County Fair rolls into its second half with plenty of activities still on tap, highlighted by the junior livestock sale Saturday morning.

Fairfield events kicked off Monday evening with a parade through downtown Fairfield and opening of a carnival that runs through Saturday night.

Activities are based at W.L. Moody Reunion Grounds in Fairfield.

In addition to the parade, events already concluded are the Miss Freestone County and Miss Teen Freestone County pageants, which were held Tuesday evening, judging of breeding livestock and the youth rodeo Wednesday evening.

Thursday marks the start of market livestock judging and selection of animals to be sold at auction Saturday morning under the Ike Carden Pavilion.

Market animal judging is: sheep, 8 a.m. Thursday; poultry, 10 a.m. Thursday; goats, 1 p.m. Thursday; steers, 5 p.m. Thursday; swine, 8 a.m. Friday; and rabbits, 1 p.m. Friday.

FFA and 4-H Club members have entered 426 animals for judging this year, 271 of them in market shows.

The top 135 market animals are to be sold at auction at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

A horse project halter is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the rodeo arena.

Last year the junior livestock sale grossed about $350,000.

Professional rodeo action is slated for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Home economics projects are on display through Saturday at Fairfield Community Center.

The fair winds down Saturday with a finale dance from 8 p.m. until midnight featuring “Billy Ray and Heart of Night.”
