Little Dribblers tip off this week

Fairfield Girls’ Little Dribblers plays host to 64 basketball teams this week as they host a Little Dribblers National Championship tournament.

The tourney started Wednesday afternoon and runs through championship games Saturday evening.

In all, 116 games are on tap, utilizing all the Fairfield Independent School District gymnasiums.

This is the second national championship Fairfield has hosted this year—-the boys’ event came to town in April and saw the hometown junior and senior division teams win crowns.

Little Dribbers competition is divided into a National League for large towns and an American League for smaller towns. Fairfield plays in the American League.

Age divisions are juniors, ages 10 and under; majors, 12 and under; and seniors, 14 and under.

Over the years, Fairfield girls have won two junior, three major and three senior national championships.

Teams come from throughout Texas to compete in the tourney each year, qualifying at region tournaments to advance.

Fairfield junior players kicked off the event this week with a game early Wednesday afternoon against Bowie, followed by the seniors against Canton and the majors against Canton.

Teague has a team playing in the American Senior bracket and tipped off Wednesday evening.

Second round action gets underway at 8 a.m. Thursday, and games are slated to start at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Championship games are to be played in the maroon and gold gymnasiums at Johnson Activity Center on the Fairfield high school campus.

The American Major and Junior championships are set for 4:45 p.m. Saturday—-the majors play in the maroon gym and the juniors play in the gold gym—-and the American Senior championship is at 7:15 p.m. in the maroon gym.

In the National brackets, championship games are at 3:30 p.m. for the juniors in the gold gym, and in the maroon gym at 6 p.m. for majors and 8:30 p.m. for seniors.

Tournament director is Billy McMillian.

Prior to the tourney start Wednesday, a coaches meeting is set at the high school at 10 a.m., followed by a lunch for coaches.

The opening ceremony is at 7 p.m. Thursday in the maroon gym and features the Dallas Mavericks mascot.

Members of the Fairfield junior team are: Britain Bossier, Joanna Zamora, Belle Johnson, Tanna Lide, Emily Knight, Lauran Adcock, Carrington Roberts, Ivieya Daniels, Bailey Warren, Blair Harris, Kamri Griffin, Kylie Swinson and Josie Richardson.

The juniors are coached by Ren Roberts, Craig Knight and Danny Richardson.

Playing for the Fairfield majors are: Erica Lyle, Elena Gallegos, Brandi Carter, Kaitlyn Diaz, Jocelynn Johnson, Jasmine Osuna, Brandi Green, Lauren Cole, Keara Birdow, Da’meka Shed, Cassidy Warren, Brooke Bossier and Kimberly Hayes.

Major team coaches are Billy McMillian, Weldon Alexander and Tracie Warren.

Representing Fairfield on the senior team are: Kayli Banks, Susan Owens, Caitlynn Stone, Jaida Smith, Karonesha Lowery, Tiara Tatum, Keyosha Bass, Madison Alexander, Ainsley Richardson, Kamry Whitehead and Hannah Spradlin.

Coaching the seniors are Amelia Tatum, Yokoletha Nelms and Cheryl Stone.
