Motocross races set this weekend

Professional motorcycle races and an estimated 10,000 fans come to Freestone county this weekend for the second round of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Action is at Freestone County Raceway, located on FCR 995 off FM 27 near Wortham.

The racing series includes a total of 12 events in Texas, Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Washington, New York and Massachusetts.

The 2010 series opened May 22 at Sacramento, Calif.

Racing features two classes, one for 250 cc motorcycles and the other for 450cc motorcycles. Each class runs two heats.

Action gets underway Friday at Freestone County Raceway with North Texas Night Series practice at 4 p.m. followed by racing.

Professional series activities take place Saturday—- practice starts at 8:30 a.m. and competition begins at 1 p.m.

Sunday is AMA Amateur Day and pro-am starting at 7:30 a.m.

The raceway features two tracks, the national layout where night series and amateur races are held and a professional track for the motocross championship. fessional track for the motocross championship.

The professional track features jumps, hills, corners and “whoops.” A heat consists of 30 minutes plus two laps per class, with scores from each race combined to determine the overall winner.

Motocross racing is a test of stamina, skill and speed.

Founded in 2000, Freestone County Raceway was built by Tony Miller of Houston on family land near Wortham.

Originally, the facility consisted of an amateur day-and-night track for riders and families.

In 2007, a new pro track was constructed to host the first AMA Motocross National races held in Texas in 20 years.

Tickets to the races are $30 for adults and $15 for children on Saturday, or $40 for adults and $25 for children for both Saturday and Sunday admission.

The RiderDown Foundation is partnering with Carter BloodCare on Saturday to hold a blood drive, from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the track.

RiderDown’s mission is to help injured off-road riders and is holding a week-long series of blood drives across the country.

Carter BloodCare serves 16 hospitals in Central Texas and more than 200 hospitals in its 56-county service area of north, central and east Texas.

Potential donors must be at least 17 years, 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health.

Throughout the weekend vendors will operate food concessions at the raceway, along with motorcycle and gear dealers and souvenir sales.
