Jacob Day reports driving Billy Jim's "Mule" at night. Suddenly an apparition quickly filled the entire frontal area of the "Mule". One very large Owl had dived on the headlamps of the "Mule', no doubt suspecting a possible meal. This particular "Mule" is open in the front, no windshield. Due to a slight miscalculation on the part of Mr. Owl, coupled with the absence of a front windshield…..Mr. Owl dived at Mach speed and struck the hood of the "Mule". He bounced off like a dud torpedo, came in over the dash, thudded against the seat, flopped his wings and fell into the floorboard, upside down, between Jacob's feet. Now remember, Jacob is in the seat, feet in the floorboard, the "Mule" is in gear, traveling forward and Mister Owl is all topsy-turvy to the world, laying on his back, trying to right himself with that set of big, old powerful wings. Jacob sets right in trying quickly to scoot him back to freedom, still on his back, with his feet to the left, to give both of them a little peace and quiet…..But, alas, it was not to be. Mister Owl grabbed the cuff of one of Jacob's pants legs with his talons, and then Jacob began kicking with one foot and shaking with the other, still motoring along, Jacob kicking like a punter on a profootball team with one leg and foot, doing the Hokey- Pokey with the other. This went on until either Jacob was successful with his kicking/ Hokey-Pokey routine, or the owl just decided that his was suddenly a most unfriendly environment. When last viewed, Mister Owl had finally hit the ground, immediately spread those five foot wings and glided upward to a tree. Jacob allows that he will never forget this wise, old owl, especially each time that he puts on his formerly nearly new pair of blue jeans….The ones with the newly made 6 inch rip in the cuff!
Until Next Week . . RALPH BILLINGS
