426 head entered in livestock show
With less than a month to go, junior livestock showmen are putting the finishing touches on their animals to be judged in the Freestone County Fair.
The fair is set for June 14-19 at W.L. Moody Reunion Grounds in Fairfield.
On tap are a parade, outdoor dances, breeding and market livestock shows, carnival, Miss Freestone County pageant and the junior livestock sale.
There are a total of 426 entries in the livestock shows, down a bit from the 499 entries last year.
In the breeding shows, the numbers are 30 goats, 29 heifers, 12 lambs, seven pens of rabbits and 58 swine, and showmen have entered 19 horses in the halter show.
Breeding animals are judged Tuesday and Wednesday.
The market shows include 67 goats, 36 lambs, 38 pens of rabbits, 32 steers, 73 swine and 25 pens of chickens.
Market judging is Wednesday-Friday.
From market entries, 125 will be selected for the livestock sale Saturday morning.
Last year, buyers spent $326,000 at the auction, and added money brought the sale total to a little more than $350,000.
Top selling animal was the grand champion steer exhibited by Fairfield FFA member Riley Jo Davidson. The steer brought $10,000.
The fair kicks off at 7 p.m. Monday, June 14, with a parade down Commerce Street in Fairfield.
A carnival will run Monday-Saturday at the fairgrounds.
The Miss Freestone County and Miss Teen Freestone County pageants are at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairfield high school auditorium.
Home economics exhibits will be judged Tuesday and are to be on display Wednesday- Saturday.
Rodeo action is set for Wedneday evening, for youth, and on Friday and Saturday nights for professional competition.
Musical entertainment is planned at the fairgrounds each night of the fair, including a kickoff dance Monday evening and a grand finale dance Saturday evening.
