City, school voters pick favorites
There were few surprises over the weekend as voters throughout Freestone county reported to the polls to elect members of city and school offices.
In all, voters chose 18 candidates from a field of more than 30 hopefuls.
Another four candidates were declared winners without an election because they were unopposed for office.
In addition, Wortham Independent School District voters approved a $7 million bond issue to construct a new senior high school.
Most crowded election was for three at-large seats on the Fairfield ISD board of trustees, sought by seven candidates.
Winning election to the FISD board were incumbents Teresa Vandiver, 483 votes, and LaCharles Bass, 397 votes, and Tracie Ezell, 416 votes.
Other FISD vote totals were: John Fryer, 383; Marcus Turner, 128; Charlene Ward, 112; and Susan Keen, 52.
Fairfield Mayor Roy Hill received 183 votes to defeat challenger James Gunter, 135.
Winner of a contested race for the remaining year of a 2-year term for place four on the Fairfield council was Donna Tyus, 230, over Scott Schick, 99.
Running unopposed for re-election to the Fairfield council were Joe Lee Kirgan, Jr., in place one, 274 votes, and Luke Ward, Jr., in place two, 263 votes.
The City of Teague, which was down to just three aldermen because of resignations over the past several months, filled all seats and the office of mayor.
Running unopposed for mayor was Earnest Pack, 335 votes, and Chris Nickleberry in place four, 325 votes.
In place one, challenger David D. Huffman received 325 votes to unseat incumbent James Monks, 203, in place one.
Place three on the Teague council went to Garlan Steed over John Scott Boyd, 225-190.
For the remaining year of an unexpired term in place five on the Teague council, Terry Gibson won with 151 votes, Rick Harris received 149 and Tom Aderman got 112.
Two candidates were unopposed for the Teague school board. Declared winners were Brian Bowers in place two and incumbent Jeff Gonzales in place four.
Wortham city voters elected three at-large members to its council—- Scott Batts earned 74 votes, incumbent Albert E. Hall received 69 and Kelly Calame got 68.
Vote totals for three other candidates in the Wortham city election were: incumbent Cliff Nesmith, 64; Judy Edwards, 50; and incumbent Frank A. McClellan, 42.
The Wortham ISD bond election passed by almost a 3-to-one margin, with 136 voters favoring construction of a new high school and 46 opposing.
In addition to building a new high school, to be located across the street from the present facility, the $7 million bond issue will fund improvements to Bulldog Stadium, school bus purchases and construction of a new track if funds are available.
Running unopposed for the WISD board of trustees and declared winners without an election were incumbent Brent Jones in place three and Scott Spencer in place four.
The City of Streetman ran into sort of a logjam when two candidates came out, unofficially, with the same number of votes.
Streetman Mayor Johnny Robinson ran unopposed and received 67 votes for re-election and Steve Rossiaky got 49 votes for a clear cut win for one of two at-large city commission seats.
But, incumbent Sherill Minze and Billy Godfrey each earned 44 votes for the second spot on the commission.
If the two candidates remain tied after votes are canvassed this week, a runoff election could be in the works.
Other candidates receiving votes for Streetman city commission are Larry Allen, 40, and Carroll North, 8.
