Former Eagles help win crown

Three former Fairfield Eagles thinclads each won an event to help McMurry University win its 12th consecutive American Southwest Conference track and field championship.

The ASC meet was held Friday and Saturday in Abilene.

Former Eagles competing were Gavan Bass, Eric Palmer and Danny Filis.

Filis threw the javelin 187 feet, six inches to win the event and was eighth in pole vault, clearing 14-6.

Bass covered 44-5.25 to win the triple jump, and event in which he claimed a state title his senior year at FHS.

The athlete ran as a member of the first place McMurry spint relay team at the ASC meet—-the team ran the race in 41.44 seconds—-and covered 22.-6.25 for third place in long jump.

Palmer won the long jump with an effort of 22-10, and finished seventh in the 400-meter dash.

Bass also ran ninth in the 100-meter dash and 11th in the 200-meter dash.

McMurry scored 326 points in the meet to easily outpace second place UT-Tyler, 132 points.
