FHS Eagles wrap up 2010 baseball

A notch out of post-season playoffs . . .

Marking down a win and a loss last week, the Fairfield high school Eagles baseball team concluded the 2010 season one place out of advancing to the post season playoffs.

The Eagles beat Palestine Westwood 14-4 and lost to Crockett 14-0.

After beating Westwood, the Fairfield nine learned they missed the playoffs because Crockett defeated Brownsboro.

“That might have been the worse feeling, doing what you were supposed to do to give yourself a chance at the playoffs and find out that it was not enough,” FHS head coach Bill Crawford says.

Athens claims the District 20-AAA crown with a 10-0 record, Brownsboro finished 7-3 in a tie with Crockett and won a playoff game to head to the playoffs as the second place district team.

The Eagles posted a 7-3 mark for fourth place, and Westwood and Palestine were both 1-9.

In the game against Westwood, the FHS nine tallied five runs in the first inning.

Leading off with a single, Caleb Gunnels then stole second and moved to third when a throw from the Westwood catcher sailed into the outfield.

Cullen Minze reached base on a dropped third strike, which allowed Gunnels to score, stole second and moved to third on an infield single by Evan Simpson.

Josh Brown grounded out to score Minze, Michael Mooneyham rapped a 2-RBI double and scored on a single by Aaron Jones, who scored on a double down the left field line by Garrett Wickens.

The Eagles added a run in the second when Gunnels led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a ground ball out by Minze.

The third was the put away inning as Fairfield doubled its score by adding six runs.

Mooneyham led off with a single, Jones was hit by a pitch and Wickens homered to clear the bases.

Following that, Colby Green was hit by a pitch, Gunnels was issued a walk, Jeff Wood pinch hit and singled to center to score Green and Simpson, and Justin Terry grounded out to score Gunnels and Wood.

Westwood scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Hall walked, moved to third on a passed ball and a fielding error, then stole home on the back end of a double steal. The Eagles ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on a walk-off single by Michael Raymond.

In the season finale against Crockett, the Fairfield team managed just one hit, by Minze, as Crockett scored in the fifth, second and fourth innings.

“We didn’t have much life in the game, nothing to play for but pride,” Crawford says. “We had several situations that led to the struggles, but the bottom line is we didn’t show up and play anywhere near where we should have.”

Crockett faces Lorena in bi-district and Brownsboro plays Mexia in a 3-game series at 7 p.m. Thursday and 2 p.m. Friday in Fairfield.
