Softball team wins title
The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles clinched the District 20- AAA softball title early last week, then played an exciting regular season finale that went into extra innings before they won.
The Lady Eagles beat the Brownsboro Lady Bears and Athens Lady Hornets to close out district with an 8-1 record and the championship.
Early in the week against Brownsboro, the FHS squad was tied after three innings before crossing the plate 13 times over the next three innings to secure a 15-5 victory.
In the top of the first inning, pitcher Kayse Kirgan led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mia Mayo, stole third and scored on a single by Riley Jo Davidson.
Fairfield added a run in the top of the second when Erica Flori led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kassie Floyd and scored on an error-assisted single by Miss Kirgan.
Brownsboro tallied a run each in the first and third innings to tie the game 2-all temporarily.
Four Lady Eagles, Misses Kirgan, Mayo, Becca Lyles and Floyd, scored in the fifth inning as they collected four hits and took advantage of three Brownsboro errors. Hitting safely with a single each were Misses Floyd, Katie Berger, Kirgan and Felicia Lopez-Simmons.
The Lady Bears answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, giving the FHS crew a 6-2 advantage.
Five Brownsboro errors in the top of the fifth inning helped Fairfield get five more runs and extend the lead to 11-2.
The five Lady Eagles runs came on just two hits, a single by Miss Floyd and a 2-RBI triple by Miss Davidson. Crossing the plate were Misses Floyd, Katie Berger, Kirgan, Mayo and Davidson.
For their part, Brownsboro batters rapped a pair of doubles and a single in the bottom of the fifth to score three and trail 11-5.
In the top of the sixth, Miss Floyd was issued a walk to lead off, moved to second on a single by Miss Berger and scored on a single to right by Miss Kirgan.
Miss Mayo then singled to load the bases, setting up a 3-RBI double by catcher Becca Lyles, giving the Lady Eagles 15 runs.
The win over Athens clinched the district title for Fairfield.
Winning pitcher Miss Kirgan struck out one batter and gave up seven hits.
Hosting the Lady Hornets in the regular season finale Friday night, the Lady Eagles trailed 1-0 after two innings before getting the offense in gear with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Leading off with a single, Lyndsey Ranson remained locked on first for two outs and moved to second when Miss Mayo drew a walk. With two runners on base, Miss Lyles stepped up to the plate and smashed a 3-RBI home run, giving her team a 3-1 lead.
Brownsboro tallied three in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead at 4-3 and Fairfield answered with two in the bottom.
With two outs, Miss Ranson slapped a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Miss Berger reached first on an error. Miss Berger scored on a single by Miss Kirgan for a 5-4 advantage.
Brownsboro started their fifth inning at-bat with a walk and saw that runner move to second on a walk, gain third on a passed ball and score on a flyout, knotting the score at 5-all.
From the bottom of the fifth through the bottom of the eighth, the Lady Eagles got nine players on base, two made it as far as third, but could not score.
Brownsboro managed two baserunners, but no scores, from the top of the sixth through the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the second extra inning, Miss Lopez- Simmons led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miss Flori and scored on a bunt by Miss Floyd to break the tie for a win.
Miss Kirgan started on the mound and went four innings, striking out five and giving up three hits and four runs.
Coming on in relief, Miss Flori struck out four, walked two and gave up a run and a score.
The Lady Eagles junior varsity squad also saw action last week, but lost their games against Brownsboro and Athens.
Fairfield jv fell behind Brownsboro 7-2 in the first inning and dropped a 9-3 decision.
Reaching base in the opening inning, and scoring, were Ashley Kethley and Amanda Drake.
Scoring in the second inning was Amy Lansford.
In action against the Lady Hornets, the Fairfield jv held a 3-1 lead after the first inning, then gave up five runs in the second on their way to a loss.
The Lady Eagles took advantage of four walks and leadoff batter Miss Kethley getting hit by a pitch to score three in the first inning. Crossing the plate were Misses Kethley, Natalie Neill and Miss Drake.
Fairfield took advantage of four walks in the second inning to score Misses Kethley and Drake.
By virtue of claiming the district championship, the Lady Eagles varsity team gets a bye in the first round of the post season playoffs.
Bi-district games must be played by May 4 and area games, where the Fairfield team enters the playoffs, must be completed by May 8.
