Lady Eagles place second at district
STATE 200-METER CHAMPION Derekia Coleman is on track to return to Austin in May after winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the District 20-AAA meet last week.
Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity thinclads placed second and the junior varsity won its division at the District 20- AAA track meet.
The district meet was hosted by FHS.
From the varsity division, the top three finishers in each event advance to the Region III meet set May 3-4 at Humble. This week the Lady Eagles run a region qualifiers meet at Eustace.
The FHS varsity tallied 156 points to place second behind Palestine, 201 points.
Other team totals were: Brownsboro, 78; Crockett, 64; Palestine Westwood, 63; and Athens, 44.
In the jv division, Fairfield scored 183 points to win and Westwood earned 173 for second place.
Other jv team totals were: Brownsboro, 107; Palestine, 42; Athens, 24; and Crockett, 0.
LADY EAGLE VARSITY thinclad Kathleen Chappell placed second in the 300-meter hurdles to qualify for the region track meet.
Eight members of the Lady Eagles varsity squad qualify to advance to region in 11 events.
Sprinter Derekia Coleman won both her individual races in a bid to return to the state track and field championshiups in Austin next month—-she is the defending Class AAA 200-meter champion.
Miss Coleman won the 200 meters with a time of 24.93 seconds and posted a 12.16 to win the 100.
Distance runner Lilly Duarte claimed the 3,200- meter race in a time of 12:00.68 minutes, more than a minute faster that the second place finisher, and win the 1,600-meter race in a time of 5:23.69.
Misses Duarte and Coleman teamed up with Barvion Wyatt and Shelby Wickens to run a 4:09.59 and win the 1,600-meter relay.
Showing that 400 meters is her distance, Miss Wyatt ran the 400- meter dash in 59.38 seconds to win a district gold medal. She also placed second in triple jump, covering 36 feet, two and onehalf inches, to advance to region.
Winning the discus, with a throw of 108-0.5 was Kalyn Caffey.
Pole vaulter Desiree Hodges cleared the bar at 8-6 to win the event and earn a place at the region meet.
Second place in the 300- meter hurdles for a time of 49.25 went to Kathleen Chappell.
Qualifying for region with third place finishes were Kiresten Cox, 26.73 in the 200-meter dash; Miss Wickens, 2:32.74 in the 800-meter run; and Katie Berger, 7-0 in pole vault.
Although they don’t advance to the region meet, the Fairfield jv squad turned in some top performances in their division, winning six events as well as the team title.
Picking up a pair of gold medals was Mikeshia Hudson, posting a 29.83 in the 200 meters and throwing 28-10.5 in shot put.
Hurdler Jordan Gandy clocked a 59.22 to win the jv 300-meter hurdles.
Winning the 800-meter run was Gabrielle Ransom, with a time of 2:50.6.
First place in jv discus, for a throw of 79-7, was captured by Sarah Sloat.
In triple jump, Sarah Rhoads covered 28-6 for gold.
The pole vault went to Hannah Dodds with an effort of 6-6.
